Dealing with roaches and ants is a rather straightforward task. You find their nests, buy quality pesticides, use them, and the job is pretty much done. However, dealing with mice, rats and other rodents is a more complicated feat. In order to get rid of them, you will have to take a completely different approach. While roaches are highly vulnerable to chemicals, mice and rats are not so much, since they can smell them and successfully avoid them. Exterminating these pests is not easy, but with the right combination of effective control and extermination methods, mice and rodents don’t stand a chance.
Before we head into detailing some of these methods, keep in mind that it is always advisable to seek the help of professional exterminators. However, if you are incapable of affording them or if there are none in your area, you can rely on the techniques we are going to discuss.
Your first step will be to locate their nests. Once you have done that, you will be able to discover how they got into your house in the first place. Rats and mice usually enter a house through the basement, doors or roof. Start by blocking any openings you think the pests use to get in. Also, keep in mind that they prefer to nest in quiet and dark places. Make sure to check these and look for any droppings and fur, which are an indication of their presence.
Once you have determined their location, proceed by purchasing proven and effective pest control products. You can easily find a plethora of products in your nearby stores. However, pay attention when buying because the types of products usually depend on the location of the pests and on how accessible that area is. If the area is easily accessible, you should consider using snap traps. These devices are one of the oldest but still very effective ones for rodent extermination. All you have to do is attach a bait to the trap’s lever and wait for a rodent to head for it.
If you find that the rats and mice live in an inaccessible part of your house, you will probably have to use glue traps, in order to exterminate them. You can find glue traps at any store that sells pest control products, and they are very affordable. These contraptions include a long, glue surface which features a plastic cover. All you have to do is peel off the plastic and place the glue trap in the vicinity of a nest. Once they get trapped, the rodents will not be able to free themselves from the glue. This trap will not kill them, but it will capture them and trap them in a plastic bag. You can then simply pick up this plastic bag that contains a rodent, or a number of them, and throw it away.
An advanced extermination method
These were the cheapest methods available. If you want something more advanced and expensive, you can look for zapper systems, which utilize electric current in order to electrocute rodents. These systems work on batteries and can be remotely operated. They function similarly to traps, as they also lure in the rodents in order to deliver an electric shock.
In the end, it all depends on your needs and budget. If you are having a minor problem and if you don’t want to spend too much, go with various traps. If the problem is more severe, don’t hesitate to buy advanced devices, such as zapper systems.
